A delightful, fluffy loaf of Amish White Bread, perfect for toast, sandwiches, or enjoying with butter and jam.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine yeast and sugar with warm water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt and whisk together.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: Pour the frothy yeast mixture and warm milk into the flour mix. Add butter and mix until shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size (1-2 hours).
  6. Shape the loaf: Punch down the risen dough, transfer to a floured surface, flatten into a rectangle, roll tightly, and pinch seams.
  7. Second rise: Place shaped loaf into a greased pan, cover, and let it rise for another 30-60 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake the bread: Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Cool and enjoy: Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Experiment with adding herbs, cheese, dried fruits, or nuts for a variation. Ensure yeast is fresh for proper rising.
