  • 1 packet (about 2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups (240 g) whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup (90 g) rolled oats
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) molasses
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) melted butter or oil

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining it with warm water and sugar, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
  3. Combine the molasses and melted butter or oil with the activated yeast.
  4. Bring the wet and dry ingredients together to form a sticky dough.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour.
  7. Shape the risen dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  8. Let the shaped loaf rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  11. Cool the bread in the pan for 10 minutes then transfer it to a wire rack.

Notes

Serve with butter, cheese, or use for sandwiches. Bread can be frozen for longer storage.
