Traditional Irish Soda Bread

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 and ½ cups buttermilk
  • (Optional) 1 cup of raisins or caraway seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the wet ingredients: Pour in the buttermilk and let it sit for a minute.
  4. Bring the mixture together using a wooden spoon or your hands until just combined.
  5. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
  7. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf to help it rise.
  8. Bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool the bread for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
