Chocolate Babka

Delicious and indulgent chocolate babka, perfect for gatherings and special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the bread flour, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  2. Activate the yeast: In a separate bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  3. Combine wet and dry: Add the melted butter and eggs to the yeast mixture. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer to a floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover it and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours.
  6. Prepare chocolate filling: Combine cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and a sprinkle of sugar in a bowl.
  7. Roll out the dough: Once risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle.
  8. Spread the filling over the rolled-out dough.
  9. Roll the dough tightly into a log and pinch the seams closed.
  10. Cut the log in half lengthwise and twist the two halves around each other to create a braid.
  11. Transfer to a greased loaf pan and let it rise for about an hour.
  12. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the pan before transferring to a wire rack.
