  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them into thin wedges; toss them with lemon juice, granulated sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant.
  4. Make the topping by mixing oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, then drizzle the brown butter over and mix until crumbly.
  5. Assemble the crisp by layering the apple mixture in a baking dish and topping it with the crumble.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is golden.
  7. Cool for at least 10 minutes before serving with vanilla ice cream.
