Cheesy Onion Bread

A delightful and comforting cheesy onion bread that combines sweet, caramelized onions with sharp cheddar cheese, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium-sized onions, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (around 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the onions by sautéing in a skillet over medium heat until soft and translucent, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar, sprinkling yeast on top, and letting it sit until frothy (5-10 minutes).
  4. Mix the dough by combining bread flour and salt, making a well in center, adding yeast mixture and melted butter, and mixing to form a shaggy dough.
  5. Add sautéed onions and cheese, folding them into the dough.
  6. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  7. First rise the dough in an oiled bowl covered with a towel for 1 hour or until doubled.
  8. Shape the dough into a loaf and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Feel free to add fresh herbs or spices to the dough for extra flavor. If you miss the salt, your bread will lack flavor, so don’t skip it!
