Southern Style Goulash

A comforting Southern twist on the classic goulash, filled with ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato-based sauce.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes (with juices)
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Toss in the diced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic; sauté for an additional minute.
  4. Brown the ground beef, breaking it apart, and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Pour in the uncooked elbow macaroni, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes with juices, and beef broth.
  6. Add Worcestershire sauce, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, then stir together.
  7. Simmer the mixture at a gentle boil for about 15-20 minutes.
  8. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese about 5 minutes before serving.
  9. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before enjoying.

Notes

Serve with crusty bread or a simple green salad for a complete meal. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to a week or freeze for later.
